TGA coaches and former students turned in some amazing performances in major July events:

Ariel Chang (top left) won the Michigan Girls State Junior, shooting an astounding 9-under-par 62 in the second round of stroke play to win medalist honors, then prevailing in four rounds of match play to win the title. Ariel also advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Michigan Women’s State Amateur. Ariel is a TGA coach and will be a senior at Utica Eisenhower High School. She already has accepted a scholarship to play at University of Detroit Mercy.

Lauren Timpf (top right) won the 15-under division of the Michigan Girls State Junior, then created quite a stir in the Michigan Women’s Amateur by reaching the final eight. Lauren is only 13 years old, but she kept her cool against much older opponents, winning her first two matches before losing to eventual champion Anna Kramer, 1-up, in the quarterfinals. Lauren started with a TGA after-school class in 2013, then attended tons of summer camps and parent-child events from 2014 through 2018. Now she is our youngest assistant coach.

Grant Haefner (bottom left) lost in a playoff in the Syron Memorial at Pontiac Country Club, shooting rounds of 71-71-70. Later in July he won the Jackson County Open with rounds of 67-69. Grant is a TGA coach and the No. 1 player on Wayne State’s golf team.

Audrey Becker (bottom right) lost to Ariel Chang in the final of the Michigan Girls State Junior, then advanced to match play in the Michigan Women’s Amateur. Audrey, who will be a senior at Grosse Pointe South High School, will soon become the third member of her family to be a TGA coach. She was hired just before the pandemic and will begin coaching during the school year. Her two older brothers also coached for TGA.
