TGA of Southeast Michigan

Two Wayne State captains now teaching for TGA, and the connection spans 56 years

Jim Hartnett (left) and Grant Haefner help TGA students get into proper position.

Two of TGA’s newest lead instructors are both captains of the Wayne State University golf team. Grant Haefner is a senior majoring in management and current captain. Jim Hartnett held that role in 1964.

Grant was a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar for 2018-19. He is an all-conference player, qualified for the 2019 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst and was medalist in the Michigan Amateur. After he graduates in December 2020, Grant plans to turn pro and try to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour.

Jim says things were a bit different in 1964, when tuition at Wayne State was $8 per credit hour. He enjoyed his time on the golf team and began a long business career after graduation, including some golf-related projects. At age 76, he is still a marketing consultant, does hot yoga three days a week and plays lots of golf. He shot his age for the first time last summer.

And here’s another Wayne State connection. Assistant coach Max O’Rourke of Walled Lake Northern High School recently signed a letter of intent to play for Wayne State next year. Max, his younger brother Ryan and teammate Dylan Sokol all are former TGA students, and they are among 62 former students who have become TGA coaches. And the Walled Lake Northern coach, Jim Ellis, starting teaching TGA classes in the fall.

We are very proud of the entire TGA team and welcome the following new coaches for 2020:

Lead instructors — Keilani Doss, Grant Haefner, Jim Hartnett, Shawn Kungel, Brad Walters.

Assistant coaches — Marco Amicucci, Luke Babington, Matthew Himmelsbaugh, Sabel Imesch, Lauren Kupelian, Mitchell Lawley, Noah Sabaj and Lauren Timpf.
