Coach Orie wins big award, plus other tourney highlights

Assistant chapter director Orie Murray, who also coaches the Oakland Community College men’s team, was named regional coach of the year for Michigan, Indiana and Ohio

Congratulations to TGA coaches and former players on some big honors in May:

Orie Murray, in addition to her duties as TGA assistant chapter director, is the men’s golf coach at Oakland Community College. This spring her team won the NJCAA Region XII tournament and advanced to nationals for the second year in a row.

At the awards ceremony after regionals, Orie was stunned to learn that she was named coach of the year by her peers in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. She is the only woman coach in the region. “I was definitely surprised,” Orie said.

She has been OCC’s coach for four years and thoroughly enjoys working with her student-athletes. “It has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, because these are young adults who are in their first or second year on their own. They’re not kids, but they’re not fully adults, either. You’re helping them along the way.”

Greg Fisher has been friends with Steven Marques since kindergarten 55 years ago. On May 24, they became the first two-time winners of the Golf Association of Michigan Net Chapman Championship. They shot a seven-under-par 65 in the unique format at Eagle Eye in Lansing. Greg has been a TGA lead instructor since 2017.

Former TGA students Lorenzo Pinili and Ryan O’Rourke tied for medalist honors with three-under-par 68s in the Oakland County High School championship at Twin Lakes. Lorenzo plays for Brother Rice. Ryan, who also is a TGA assistant coach, players for Walled Lake Northern.

Good luck to Lorenzo, Ryan and many former TGA students and current assistant coaches who will be competing this month in regional and state high school events.
